Toxic Plant Parts

This is a basic list of toxic plant parts you need to know. This is not a definitive list of all plants with toxic parts.

Toxic or Poisonous Seeds and Rind:

  • Almond tree leaves, stems, roots, and the shell surrounding the edible kernel.
  • Apple seeds
  • Apricot – Inner seed
  • Balsam Pear – Seeds, the rind of the fruit.
  • Avocado tree leaves, stems, roots, and unripe fruit.
  • Black Walnut hulls and bark
  • Cashew shells contain a toxic, poisonous oil.
  • Cherry twigs, leaves, seed pits
  • Fig milky sap in leaves and fruit. But the fruit itself is alright.
  • Nectarine seed, inner pit
  • Oak Trees, leaves, and acorns.
  • Peach pit, inner seed, leaves, and bark
  • Pear seeds, leaves, and bark
  • Plum leaves, seeds, and bark
  • Sorghum, all part
  • Tomato plant leaves and stems are toxic/poisonous, but not the tomato.
  • Walnut outer green hulls
  • Wild Black Cherry (Choke Cherry, Rum Cherry) All parts. Withered leaves are poisonous.


Vegetables and Herbs – Toxic and Poisonous Parts

  • Asparagus – Berries and eating green shoots raw may cause dermatitis.
  • Eggplant, leaves, stems, and roots are toxic except for the fruit.
  • Elderberry – all parts
  • Fava bean, raw or half-cooked beans. Some people are allergic to fava bean and have “fava bean fever.”
  • Horse beans are toxic raw or half-cooked beans.
  • Kidney Beans, as few as five raw beans or a single undercooked kidney bean, can cause severe nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pains.
  • Potato foliage/leaves/eyes/sprouts are poisonous, toxic, and can be fatal.
  • Rhubarb, leaves, and uncooked stems are toxic. Always cook rhubarb.
  • Rosemary – leaves in some species.
  • Sage – leaves of some species.
  • Wild onion – (also cultivated onion) – all parts are toxic except the onion bulb.
  • Wild Parsnip roots and foliage. Some people get heartbeat irregularities after eating parsnip.

  • Raisins or Grapes
  • Apple Seeds
  • Avocados
  • Peaches
  • Plums
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Gum or Anything Containing Xylitol
  • Tobacco
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee, or Anything With Caffeine
  • Coconut or Coconut Oil
    Macadamia Nuts,
  • Almonds, Pecans, and Walnuts
  • Alcohol
  • Anything Salty
  • Yeast Dough
  • Tuna
  • Onions, Chives, Garlic
  • Milk and Other Dairy Products
  • Alcohol
  • Grapes and Raisins
  • Caffeine
  • Chocolate
  • Fat Trimmings and Bones
  • Raw Eggs
  • Raw Meat or Fish
  • Dog Food
  • Liver
  • Yeast Dough
